From 4 January, Western Australians who received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine more than four months ago are now eligible to receive a third dose.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has provided updated advice on the timing of booster vaccines (external link) based on the emergence of the Omicron variant.

It is important people get their third dose for further protection when they are eligible, particularly with WA transitioning its border controls on February 5 and community cases are expected.

Both Comirnaty (Pfizer) or Spikevax (Moderna) are recommended by ATAGI for booster vaccines.

People with immunocompromising conditions are encouraged to receive a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the primary course of COVID-19 vaccination. This third dose is to bring immunity up to the level as the general COVID-vaccinated population.

You can get your third dose at state run clinics, GPs, pharmacies and Aboriginal Medical Services.

Third doses are not be included in WA’s overall vaccination rates, as based on current ATAGI national advice, a person is considered ‘fully vaccinated’ once they have completed a first and second dose.

Western Australia workers who come under an existing vaccine mandate will now be required to have a third dose within one month of eligibility, as part of the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.
