Fred Moorman, a candidate for Athens-Clarke County mayor, was arrested at a St. Simons Island beach Saturday and charged with indecent exposure, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Moorman said he was in a secluded area, decided to “uncover my buttocks” and someone reported him to the police.

He defended his actions to the newspaper, comparing himself to a woman wearing a thong bathing suit.

“They’re able to walk around with small coverings…,” Moorman told the ABH. “And I think to treat a man as they did treat me, I think, is a bit preposterous and unnecessary.”

Moorman was released from the Glynn County Jail on $1,256 bond on May 7, the same day as his arrest.

The landlord and former dermatologist is one of four candidates challenging incumbent Mayor Kelly Girtz in the May 24 election.
